Stainless Steel Laser Cutting Service

Special Metal Alloys’ laser cutting services are applicable to all the stainless steel and nickel alloy products that we supply.

We understand that the basic product we provide will need to be made suitable for your unique project. Rather than find a secondary service provider to tailor your materials, we aim to make life easier for you by offering bespoke adjustments before shipment.

Or tube processing service will save you time and money, allowing you to meet project deadlines and remain below budget.

This service involves cutting tubes to size, as well as drilling, slotting, or bevelling tube ends for weld prep.

What types of Stainless Steel can we laser cut?

Special Metal Alloys can laser cut the following stainless steel alloys: Austenitic , Ferritic, Austenitic-Ferritic (Duplex) and Martensitic .

We can process any stainless steel products with the following specifications:

  • tubes up to 355 mm (14”)
  • bar weight up to 100 kg/m (67 lb/ft)
  • loading lengths up to 18 m (60’)
  • unloading lengths up to 18 m (60’)

Different shapes of stainless steel tube can be laser cut if they fall within the following ranges:

  • Round Tube – 12mm to 355mm diameter; 8mm max thickness
  • Square Sections – 12mm to 250mm diameter; 8mm max thickness
  • Rectangle Sections – from 12mm to 300mm x 200mm diameter; 8mm max thickness

More information on specifications is available here.

How does laser cutting work?

Stainless steel laser cutting is also known as ‘light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation’.

This means that a high energy beam of light is directed onto the steel with pinpoint accuracy.

Rapid localised vaporisation occurs, where the laser beam melts the material as it moves, ‘cutting’ through it. Molten metal is removed by blasts of an inert gas (usually Nitrogen for stainless steel products).

Intricate adjustments can be made to stainless steel materials this way, achieving tight tolerances without too much expenditure on tools and labour costs.

What else can Special Metal Alloys offer?
